The Heritage House of Concarneau

Immerse yourself in history at the Concarneau Heritage Centre

During your stay at the Hôtel de France et d’Europe***, a visit to the Concarneau Heritage Centre is a must. This iconic venue offers a deeper understanding of the city's soul.

Located at the entrance to the famous walled city, this cultural centre invites you to discover the history, architecture, and maritime heritage of Concarneau, going far beyond the postcard image.

A must-see in the heart of the walled city

Housed in a listed historical monument, the Heritage Centre occupies buildings dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries, formerly dedicated to the city's defense.

Since 2024, it has been spread across two complementary sites:
  • The Guards' Lodge, which welcomes visitors, houses the ticket office, and includes a heritage shop,
  • The Governor's Tower and Lodge, which house the exhibitions and offer privileged access to the fortifications.
It is the only place in the walled city where you can enter the ramparts themselves, a unique experience for better understanding Concarneau's defensive history.

A cultural discovery for the whole family

Open from April to October, the Heritage Centre offers a rich and accessible cultural program for everyone.

Admission to the exhibitions is free, making it an ideal outing for families, couples, or travelers curious about local culture.

Throughout the year, you can discover:
  • Temporary exhibitions dedicated to the history of Concarneau and its surrounding area,
  • Guided tours of the walled city and the town (traditional or theatrical),
  • Fun and educational workshops for children, especially popular during school holidays.

These activities are offered by accredited guides as part of the "Rendez-vous du Patrimoine" program, renowned for the quality of its cultural outreach.

The ideal starting point for exploring Concarneau from a different perspective

The Heritage Center is also an excellent starting point for exploring Concarneau from another angle: maritime traditions, working-class life linked to the canneries, defensive architecture, and the evolution of the fishing port.

It allows you to better understand Concarneau's identity before strolling along the quays, the coastal path, or through the lively streets of the walled city.
